Rural tourism

Japra valley is one of the most important mining-foundry complexes of antic times on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was raised by Illyrian tribe Japods, after which Japra got its name, more than 2000 years ago and it was significantly developed by Romans. Researches had been performed until 1963 in Blagaj Japra, Maslovare, Donji Agici - Celopek and Gradina near Cela. There had been sensational archeological findings. .Unfortunately, due to the lack of funds, all that had been revealed had also been covered and scattered, except for some movable monuments that we late moved to Earth Museum in Sarajevo as exhibits. If all items, including sculptures of miners from 4th century, tombs, tools, cold weapons, household items and mining tools from antic time, that were collected in this area were to be returned, an unique archeological park in Bosnia and Herzegovina could be organized in Japra valley.

Valley of Japra River is situated in north-west part of Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the area underneath Grmec Mountain between rivers Sana and Una at altitude of 100 to 800 meters. It is known for quality soil, favorable climate, rich vegetation and animal life. It has natural preconditions for cattle breeding, fruit production as well as for development of rural and fishing tourism. River Japra offers numerous kinds of fish to sports fisherman: huchen, trout, pike, barbell, chub, perch and redeye.

Surrounded by mild clearings of Grmec mountain slopes, intersected by clear wells and vivid springs that flow into magical beauty Japra, the valley of this river resembles of a natural fairy tale that is soon to become a tourist oasis for numerous guests from neighboring towns in Banja Luka and Bihac region but also an attractive place for studying and entertainment of school pupils and students.

During August 2009 asphalting of roads along Japra valley was completely finished: from Blagaj, where Japra flows into Sana river, through Donji Agići, Budimlić Japra and Dubovik al the way to Hašani, birth place of famous writer Branko Copic and neighboring village Majkić Japra, where at Radanovo polje underneath Grmec this clear and restless mountain river Japra comes forth. As for the communal infrastructure, it remains that supplies with healthy drinking water gets improved, given there is plenty of it in the surrounding area but also more stable supplies with electrical energy of satisfactory voltage and stabile land phone lines.

In Donji Agici there are primary school "Branko Ćopić", post office, ambulance and general Agricultural Cooperative "Agrojapra". In terms of strengthening of production focus of this area as of an important segment of rural tourism, the Cooperative has initiated and developed diverse agricultural production with rural households as well as production of final products in Cooperative’s production facilities. While preparing for rural tourism, Agrojapra has undertaken several steps on creation of service infrastructure for potential rural tourism guests: built a watermill on Japra river with a accompanying beach and swimming zone that represent a tourist attraction but are also educational ecological center; reconstructed and started with work of Cooperative’s restaurant “Breza” with 80 seats and a fountain; built a gas station that works in two shifts and opened a mini-market store.

In future period we will focus our energy on preparation of the population and the Cooperative for this significant additional activity. To that end we started reconstruction of the facility aimed for rural and the Cooperative’s activities such as education, culture and entertainment of the population, especially the youth. As a part of this unique center for culture and education we shall organize educational projects for villagers for providing rural tourism services. Special attention will be devoted to creation of accommodation capacities in rural households, specialization in preparation of domestic healthy food specialties, construction of hiking and bicycling paths, organization of various activities in the nature of Sub-Grmec and Sub-Kozara mountain areas through one day field and later for weekend and holiday arrangements and full-scope rural tourism.
